An important issue has just come to my attention regarding changes afoot in Europe with regards to bio-dynamic medicine and foods. The EU Parliament and bureaucracy has decided that things like Weleda and Wala medicines and Bio-dynamic babyfoods are too small a market for special laws of protection to be made for them, and instead are demanding they fit into laws to protect the population from poor quality products made from totally different synthetic products. For example, a perfectly good Biodynamic babyfood company has been put out of business by being forced to put synthetic vitamins into its packs, when the food already had more natural vitamins than the EU standards. Hence the people who want good quality babyfood stopped buying it.

I have also heard of many small ’slow food’ artisan manufacturers of things such as cheese in Europe are under threat due to the homogenisation of foods in the massive European market.

This is a direct and immediate threat to freedom of choice and alternative products and ideas throughout Europe and after that the rest of the world. This will affect all Biodynamic and organic agriculture, traditional artisan foods, and extend to holistic anthroposophic medicines, Waldorf/Steiner education and other initiatives coming from the ideas of Rudolf Steiner.

Perhaps even more importantly this threatens the capacity of people to have choices of top quality foods, medicine and education. If 1 million signatures can be gathered showing support for these products and methods (and the free choice associated with them!) then the EU Parliament will pass a law to protect their special character. I believe this is a MOMENTOUS issue we MUST get through or else many other things will go as well in due course. Please click on this link below, and fill out your details, send and then remember to confirm your signing of the petition by clicking the confirmation in the email that is sent to you.

Been busy at work and surviving the continual rain here in the Sunshine Coast hinterland - though the garden is suffering and things are literally rotting in the ground. Nothing much is growing - the beans, tomatoes and corn are looking very sad without the heat. Happily the cherry guavas are ripe and the kids are loving climbing the trees and picking their own.

Speaking of my kids - my four year old daughter has developed a relish for beef fat without any prompting by me…just the usual instinctive eating of fat that you see in kids. Last night at dinner when examining her plate she asked in earnest and with a hint of panic “where is the fat - why haven’t I got any fat”??? Then we pointed it out to her on her steak and then she sang a lovely little song “I’m a lucky duck I got all the fat…I’m the lucky duck I got all the fat…I love fat”. Made us laugh.

Now back to the lovely guava tree - guavas have one of the highest natural sources of vitamin C. Humans are almost unique in their inability to manufacture vitamin C. For instance goats are thought to make many thousands of mg per day and step up production 10 fold when sick. One theory as to why humans can’t is that as hunter gatherers we used to get so much in the diet from berries and wild fruits/vegetables that we selectively lost the ability to make it. So now we must rely on it in our diet. Vitamin C is an important nutrient for many things including immune health, for detoxification and for strength of skin, capillaries. Include vitamin C rich foods every day - raw, fresh fruit (such as berries & citrus) and vegetables (capsicum, tomatoes, greens) & herbs (like parsley) are the best sources. Vitamin C is water soluble and easily destroyed with cooking, oxygenation and heat & light etc. As always, fresh is best. Vitamin C rich foods are particularly important coming into autumn and the change of season.

Stay healthy and happy.

My name is Karen McElroy and I am a naturopath and medical herbalist. I ran a busy practice for 8 years in Melbourne before returning to the Sunshine Coast with my young family in early 2007. I now run my practice from a lovely multidisciplinary clinic in Noosa…(which is a nice place to visit for an occasional consultation for some of my old clients from Melbourne who have stayed with me via phone consultations!)
I am passionate about holistic health and find that if we get the simple things right - such as good nourishing whole foods, clean air and water, good sleep and a balance in work and play - the body does a wonderful job of maintaining health. Along with addressing lifestyle and environmental factors, I have found herbal, nutritional and energetic medicines to be invaluable tools in enhancing and optimising our body function and wellbeing. For example, specialising in women’s health, I have had great success over the years in helping women alleviate health complaints or achieve a healthy and successful pregnancy through good nutrition and herbal medicines.

When I am not at work in the clinic I am busy cooking and crafting with my two gorgeous kids, maintaining with my partner our lush 5 acres and expanding and growing our permaculture garden, keeping our 8 chickens happy and various wild animals at bay….hares, bandicoots, kangaroos, snakes, treefrogs etc etc…who share our beautiful land with us.

I hope to share my insights into health from time to time with the nourishing community.
